Building the Game Prototype

Greetings, fellow game development enthusiasts! Welcome to our next devlog. This week has been all about preparation and finalizing our design and technical documents.

Design and Technical Documents:  We have completed these documents and they will now serve us as the foundation for our game. The design document describes the core experience, game description, base references, player personas, play scenarios, and conceptual models. The technical document covers the development plan, technological requirements, main features, and their alignment with the experience goals. In order to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of our vision, we have made them available on the main page of our game.

Unity as Our Game Engine: After careful consideration, we've chosen Unity as our game engine. Unity offers a powerful platform that will enable us to bring our game prototype to life with ease. Its extensive library of tools and resources, along with its supportive community, make it a suitable choice for our development needs.

In previous week we completed the following tasks:

Our comment about the completed tasks from the previous week:

Ondrej

Hi, last week I constructed the development plan and together with Tereza and finished the Design Document. Especially I tried to develop the player personas and the player scenarios. I also generated profile pictures for the players personas using their characteristics and AI image generator Leonardo.ai. After that I started to explore Unity as a chosen platform for developing the game.

João

Hello, I finished the Tech document, where I specified the technological requirements, main features and technical challenges of the game, and wrote about the features to the experience goals. I also wrote about the core gameplay loops and modes.  After that I started with Ondrej to explore Unity for game developing and started to code the first prototype.

Tereza

Hello! Last week, Ondrej and I worked on recreating the player personas and refining the value proposition for each persona to make it more realistic and aligned with our concept. Afterwards, I focused on developing the conceptual models for the core gameplay elements. Finally, I dedicated some time to acquiring basic knowledge of Unity in preparation for programming the prototype next week.

The tasks for the next week:

Ondrej will work on the prototype. He will program the player class and together with Tereza he will prepare one sample level, where he will present basic game mechanics and unique obstacles, such as

  • a ladder, where only the slim character can climb
  • strong wind, where only the fat one can pass or he can block the wind for the slim one
  • narrow path, where only the slim one can fit

João will work on the prototype as well and will prepare another sample level. He will focus on implementing basic movements of characters such as jumping and creating simple obstacles such as spikes. He will also implement the winning of one level and program the transition to another level.

Tereza will prepare with Ondrej theirs sample level. She will focus on creating pressure plate mechanics and create puzzles using the implemented obstacles. She will also code the hunger, blood sugar, and cholesterol bars and their mechanism. Moreover, she will create the initial frame to briefly explain the game's story.

By dividing our tasks , we aim to make significant progress towards the completion of our game prototype. Basically, from nothing we should complete the protorype by the end of the next week, so do not invite us to any parties because we will be busy coding 😄.

That concludes our devlog entry, stay tuned for more updates and insight as we bring our game to life!

Until next time,

Tereza, Ondrej, João
